IN THE VALLEY: Sonoma Valley offers boundless opportunities for the active visitor. SONOMA PLAZA - Shoppers around the historic Sonoma Plaza find fashionable clothing, local arts, antiques, wonderful book stores, bakeries, cheese makers, and more. OLIVE PRESS - Located at the Jacuzzi Winery, it offers tastes of locally grown olive oils, and a wide selection of related gifts and books. The process of pressing the olives is truly fascinating. It takes place during the late fall harvest season. GOLF - The valley is a golfer's paradise, with Sonoma Mission Golf and Country Club, Oakmont Golf Club, and Los Arroyos Golf Coarse all within a 10-minute drive of the ranch. HORSEBACK RIDING - A horseback ride with the knowledgeable guides of Triple Creek is a great way to experience the natural beauty of our valley. Rides are available in both Jack London and Sugarloaf Ridge State Parks. SPA FACILITIES - Spa facilities are available at several locations in Sonoma, offering the latest in personal care. Over the hill in Napa Valley, Calistoga is home to several spas that offer a soak in hot spring-fed pools or the unique experience of a mud bath. MISSION SAN FRANCISCO SOLANO DE SONOMA - The beautifully restored Mission San Francisco Solano de Sonoma is the jewel of Sonoma Plaza. Founded in 1823, it is the last and most northerly of the 21 Franciscan Missions of Alta California. GENERAL VALLEJO'S HOME - Lachryma Montis, the home of General Mariano Vallejo is a lovingly restored glimpse of early California. JACK LONDON STATE PARK - Lack London's beloved Beauty Ranch above Glen Ellen and the remains of the Wolf House make up what is now Jack London State Park, a must-see. The park includes many historic buildings and miles of hiking trails. SUGARLOAF RIDGE STATE PARK - In Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, high above Kenwood, trails lead to spectacular vistas and lovely picnic spots. WINING, DINING AND NIGHT LIFE: Enjoy and experience Sonoma Valley's fine wines, quality restaurants and unique nightlife. WINERIES - The finest of California's wines (we think) come from the Valley's small neighboring wineries. Because of the exceptional quality of grapes grown in Sonoma Valley, it is a legally designated Appellation, or viticultural area. The 17-mile long Valley of the Moon is home to over 30 wineries. Most have tasting rooms and several offer excellent tours for those who want an inside look at the art of fine wine making. RESTAURANTS - The quality and diversity of Sonoma Valley's restaurants keeps pace with it's wines, from trendy to traditional, classic to exotic, formal to portable. Much of what's served is grown or raised on small farms here in the county and the Sonoma Coast contributes fresh fish and shellfish, creating a paradise for both diners and chefs. Surrounding the Sonoma Plaza are more restaurants than one could possibly sample in a week. The tiny towns of Glen Ellen and Kenwood, both less than three miles from the Ranch, have several extraordinary restaurants. BAKERIES, CHEESE MAKERS, DELIS - Local bakeries, cheese makers and delis can help you create the picnic of your dreams. LIVE MUSIC and MOVIES - Enjoying great food and wine isn't the only thing to do in evening. Live music can often be found and the charming, historic Sebastiani Theater on the plaza has a first rate selection of movies and small live performances. Or just come back to the Ranch, sit on the porch and watch the stars. |
